The county is in the eastern part of the state of Alabama. As of 2020, 41,311 people lived in the county. The seat of the county is Dadeville, and the largest city in the county is Alexander City. A famous battle called the Battle of Horseshoe Bend (this battle ended the Creek War) took place in the area that would eventually become the county in 1814. The county was officially established in the year 1832. In addition, a southwest portion of the county was detached and added to Elmore County when it was established in 1866.
