The county is located in western Alabama. As of the year 2020, the population of the county was 12,345. The seat of the county is Livingston. The first settlers in the county were French explorers who arrived by way of Mobile. These individuals eventually settled at Fort Tombecbee, which is located near the town of Epes. In 1830, the local indigenous tribe ceded the area that now comprises the county to the government. The county, which was established in 1832, is named after General Thomas Sumter. In addition, the county is approximately 913 square miles, 904 of which are land and 9.4 of which are water. The county is also home to a facility that houses inmates.
