The Morgan County Jail’s current location was originally opened in 2006. Currently, the jail can hold a maximum of 994 inmates and employs a total of 108 correctional officers who work 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. The jail was expanded in 2016, which created an additional 444 beds. This was due to the increase in number of inmates arriving daily and more space was needed for safety and to avoid overcrowding. To send funds to an inmate, please click here or use the kiosk in the sheriff’s office lobby. Inmates are allowed to request books from the local library. Books must be paperback only, and inmates are only allowed two books at one time. To send an inmate a paperback book, it must be sent directly from the distributor.
Inmates have access to several programs while being held in the jail, including the Work Release Program and the Neighborhood Christian Center, which coordinates inmate educational classes and religious services. The jail also offers several rehabilitation services to help inmates properly cope with various mental health issues or substance abuse issues. On average, the jail can offer between 40 to 50 classes per week to inmates. In addition, inmates at the jail have access to emergency medical care if needed
Sheriff’s Office
The Morgan County Sheriff’s Office is divided into several divisions that each play a specific role in the general operations of the community. These divisions include the clerk’s office, investigations and crime divisions, a county medical examiner, drug enforcement unit, courthouse security and employees, and school resource officer. The sheriff’s office is responsible for the day-to-day operations in the county, including pistol permits, licenses, education and emergency preparedness, maintaining court documents and arrest records, marriage licenses, warrants, restraining orders, and many practices that keep the county running. Also, deputies patrol all areas of the county 24/7.

About the County / Morgan County Inmate Roster
The county is located in the northcentral part of Alabama. As of the year 2020, the county’s population was 123,421. The seat of the county is Decatur. In 1821, the county was named in honor of General Daniel Morgan, who fought in the American Revolutionary War.
