The Lawrence County Jail in Moulton, Alabama, houses incarcerated individuals who are awaiting either trial or transfer to the State of Alabama Department of Corrections. The jail maintains an average population of 130 inmates and has on-site medical services as well as several law libraries available to inmates. Nonviolent inmates at the jail also participate in roadside trash pickup program instituted by the sheriff’s office. Inmate Worker Program
The jail operates a work-release program for inmates. Inmates must be vetted before participating in this program. Those inmates who qualify for the program reside in dorm-style facilities that are equipped with bunk beds. The jail’s work-release program also permits sentenced defendants to enter the local community and maintain gainful employment with various businesses and companies. The inmate worker program allows incarcerated individuals to earn money while in jail.
In addition, inmates serving short custodial terms who are required to make certain payments, such as fines, court costs, child support, restitution, and child support, may financially contribute to those debts through their employment. Further, the work-release program allows inmates to develop skills and trades.

Inmate Mail Guidelines
Envelopes must be addressed with the inmate’s full first and last name.
In addition, inmates are not allowed to receive letters—only postcards with a maximum dimension size of 5×7 inches.
Postcards also must have the sender’s name and return address. The following postcards are unacceptable will not be delivered to the inmate:
- Defaced or altered
- Wrapped in plastic
- Marked with paint or crayon
- Marked with stickers or stained
- Marked with watermarks
- Marked with any biohazard materials, including lipstick or perfume
- Anything depicting nudity, weapons, or a gang reference.
Inmates are able to receive books or magazines with soft covers only, and these items may only be accepted directly from the publisher or distributor.

About Lawrence County / Lawrence County Inmate Roster
The county, which is located in the northern part of Alabama, was named after James Lawrence, who was a captain in the U.S. Navy. It has a total of 717 square miles and was founded in 1818. Because of the Indian Removal Act of 1830, most members of Southeast tribes were forced to go west of the Mississippi River. The county has the highest number of self-identified Native Americans in all of Alabama. There are 4,000 members of the Echota Cherokee Tribe of Alabama.
