About the County
The county is located in northwestern Alabama. It was named in honor of Colonel James Lauderdale of Tennessee. Its county seat and largest city is Florence. The county was founded in 1818 when a group of investors called Cypress Land Company purchased the land from the government. Colonel James Lauderdale was a major in John Coffee’s cavalry of volunteers and then later served under Andrew Jackson. The total size of the county is 721 square miles.
Demographics
As of 2020, the racial composition of the county was 81.75% White, 9.79% African American or black, 0.32% Native American, 0.8% Asian, 3.29% Hispanic or Latino, 0.03% Pacific Islander, and 4.02% mixed races. In addition, the county was home to 93,564 people, 38,761 households, and 23,883 families.
