The Jefferson County Jail in Alabama is responsible for holding incarcerated offenders who are either awaiting trial or transfer to the Alabama State Department of Corrections. The jail processes approximately 43,000 offenders annually, and it maintains an average of 1,000 inmates between both facilities in Birmingham and Bessemer. There are a total of 185 deputies that are assigned to both locations. Every staff member is committed to providing a safe and secure atmosphere for all inmates. Jail Visitation Hours / Jefferson County Inmate Search
Visitation is not allowed on Mondays or Fridays. Inmates must schedule a 45-minute time slot one day prior to the visit. Each inmate is allowed two visits per week. For additional information, please call 205-325-5670 (Birmingham Jail) or 205-481-4160 (Bessemer Jail). Jail Visitation Rules
- Only 2 adults and 2 children over the age of 3 years old are allowed per visit.
- Children who are under the age of 3 years old are only allowed to visit the first Sunday of each month.
- All visitors to the jail must be at least 17 years old and bring a valid state ID or driver’s license.
- All children who are under the age of 16 years old must be supervised at all times by a legal guardian.
- Visitors may not wear provocative or revealing clothing.
- No packages, cell phones, or electronic devices, are permitted in the jail.
- No food or drinks are allowed during visitation.
- The jail and its officers reserves the right to refuse entry to any visitor who is unable to comply with the rules.
- Any visitor who creates a disturbance will be asked to leave the premises.
- Visitors are subject to be searched and any visitor found bringing contraband will be prosecuted.

All incoming mail can be sent directly to the facility in which the inmate resides (either the Birmingham or Bessemer location). The envelope must include the inmate’s full first and last name, the sender’s full name, and a return address. Sheriff’s Office
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is responsible for entering and maintaining community and court records, arrest records, pistol permits, and more. Sheriff
Mark Levie Pettway is the current county sheriff. He has been serving in law enforcement for over 27 years. He was elected as Sheriff on November 6, 2018, and was the first African American elected sheriff in the county’s history. During his career, he has worked for both Birmingham and Fairfield Police Departments. His goal continues to be to bridge the gap between law enforcement and the community and strives to make the county a better place to live.
