The Hale County Jail is a 91-bed correctional facility. It has four male pods and one female inmate pod. The Hale County Jail was built in 1999, and also has a completed visitation room, commercial kitchen, law library, laundry room, two intox cells, one interview room, a records room, and also a central control tower and a waiting area. Sheriff
The current Sheriff of the county is Kenneth W. Ellis. He was sworn in on January 17, 2007, making him the very first African American sheriff of Hale County. He has been involved in law enforcement for over 20 years. Prior to serving as sheriff of the county, he served in the United States Army and retired with the rank of chief warrant officer. He then joined the Montgomery Police Department and was a decorated officer of the Quarter and was Officer of the Year several times. Sheriff Ellis attended Alabama A&M University and received an Applied Science Degree. In addition, he has several law enforcement credentials, including strategic planning certification, leadership and development, ethics and executive management, and numerous others.
About the County / Hale County Jail
Hale County is located in the western central part of Alabama. It is named after Stephen Fowler Hale, who was a Confederate officer. Its largest city is Moundville, and its county seat is Greensboro. In addition, it is home to the Hale County Jail. The county was founded January 30, 1867, following the end of the American Civil War. The first settlers of this area had migrated from Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, and North and South Carolina. The county is connected to major artists, including Walker Evans, James Agee, and William Christenberry.

As of 2020, the county’s racial composition was 40.39% White, 56.23% African American or black, 0.23% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 1.10% Latino or Hispanic, and 1.99% mixed races. In addition, the county was home to 3,611 families, 14,785 people, and 5,650 households. In addition, a portion of the county’s population resides at the Hale County Jail.
