The Etowah County Jail houses inmates awaiting trial, currently serving a sentence, or are awaiting transportation to another detention facility based on their degree of criminal charges. The facility has a team of professionals segregated into subcategories who’s mission it is to display integrity and accountability, all while continuing to provide a safe and stimulating environment for inmates. The jail is operated through the dedication of the Custody Program team, the Compliance Program team, and the Logistics Division.
When an inmate is first booked at the jail, the inmate is taking through a series of identification processes including being photographed and fingerprinted, and based upon the charges, bond conditions, and warrants, it would be determined if an inmate can be released. If unable to be released, the inmate undergoes further checks, including mental and physical health needs and is then assigned an appropriate housing unit. County deputies are trained and utilize basic management to prevent negative behavior and violence against inmates and encourage a healthy but professional relationship between inmates and officers.
The jail has both minimum and medium security housing units, both of which are supervised by staff members and correctional officers. It also has a maximum-security housing unit in which inmates are typically separated from one another.
The jail has many services, including medical, in which inmates receive evaluations by a registered nurse and a staff physician who are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If needed, inmates receive X-rays, dental care, mental health services, and access to sexually transmitted disease testing.
Other programs for inmates include the IMPACT Program, which is a 10-week course focusing on life skills. The Influence program and the Renew Our Rivers program have inmates picking up trash and debris in local town areas under direct supervision of a deputy.
