The DeKalb County Jail in Fort Payne, Alabama, houses inmates who are either awaiting trial, awaiting transfer to the Alabama Department of Corrections, or who have been sentenced to serve time less than one year. The jail also houses federal inmates at a rate of $47 per day per inmate, as deemed by a contract set in 2008 with the United States Marshal’s Office.
Annually, DeKalb County Jail processes 2,800 inmates, and maintains an average population of 235 inmates. There is a total of 46 staff members assigned to DeKalb County Jail. The staff is led by Chief Jail Administration David Smith. The jail also has on-site medical staff, including a full-time registered nurse and a part time medical doctor. Jail Visitation Hours / Dekalb County Inmate Roster
To visit an inmate, visitors must make an appointment by either visiting the sheriff’s office and using the kiosk in the lobby. In addition, visitors may make an appointment online here. However, before scheduling a visit, it is recommended that you first confirm the inmate’s presence at the facility by searching the DeKalb County inmate roster here.
Jail Visitation Rules
Each inmate is limited to only 3 visitors per visit, and each visit can only be a maximum of 30 minutes. For more specific visitation rules, please contact the jail directly at 256-845-3801.
Failure to follow the rules may result in the termination or suspension of one’s visitation privileges.

Additional Jail Information
The jail provides inmates with a law library and video conferencing, and it participates in the Work Release Program for non-violent individuals only, in which inmates leave the facility to go work for an outside employer, and return in the evening.
The jail also has non-violent inmates participate in work crews, in which inmates travel to various parts of the county collecting garbage and maintaining public highways, such as mowing the grass and participating in community service. The inmates also assist in maintaining the jail’s property, both inside and outside with various cleaning and maintenance tasks, including kitchen duty.
Sheriff’s Office
The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office consists of a deputy chief, civil clerks, a compliance clerk, an investigations clerk and public officers. Responsibilities of the office includes but not limited to entering warrants, maintaining case files, assisting with investigations, the registration of sex offenders in the local area, and registration of convicted felons. The sheriff of the county is Nick Welden.

About the County / Dekalb County Inmate Roster
The county resides in northeastern Alabama. It was named after Major General Baron Johan DeKalb, who was an American Revolution hero. It was founded on January 9, 1836 from an act if legislation when the federal government forced removal or the Indian Territory.
