Sheriff’s Office
The Dallas County Sheriff’s Department is led by Sheriff Michael L. Granthum. The local sheriff’s office works closely with local, state, and federal agencies, as well as the citizens of the county and Selma. The department has 27 sworn deputies and maintains 18 marked cars. Central dispatch is available 24 hours a day and 7 days a week, and deputies patrol 980 square miles of territory.
Officers at the sheriff’s office addresses public safety concerns and conducts investigations. They also serve restraining orders, eviction notices, and divorce decrees.

About the County / Dallas County Inmate Search
The county is located in central Alabama, where the county seat is Selma. The county’s total area equals 994 square miles. It was founded February 9, 1818 and was named after Alexander Dallas, who was the U.S Treasury Secretary from Pennsylvania. Alexander Dallas served from 1814 to 1816. The county is located in what is known as the black belt of the state’s western central section, which refers to its fertile soil and cotton plantations. By 1860, the county had produced more cotton than another other county in Alabama. After emancipation, many African Americans chose to stay in the area and work as sharecroppers and tenant farmers.
