The Cullman County Detention Center is a medium-security facility and has been open since May of 2005. It is a 326-bed facility and serves as the detention center for all municipalities in the county and for the U.S. Marshals Service in the Northern District of Alabama. Additional Jail Information

The detention center has an active work release program for inmates, which allows sentenced defendants to go out into the community and have gainful employment with those businesses who participate in this program. Inmates who are serving a short sentence are obligated to pay court fees, fines, and restitution, and also child support if indicated.

The jail also has the Inmate Trash Detail program, in which Cullman County Jail inmates work with the sheriff’s department to keep local highways clear and free of trash. This program consists of four non-violent inmates at a time, and it is supervised by a Deputy of Cullman County.

About the County

The county was named after Colonel John G. Cullman. It was organized in 1877 by German American immigrants who migrated from Ohio to found an agricultural community
