Sheriff / Clarke County Jail Roster
Sheriff DeWayne Smith was elected to his current position by the Governor in 2021. Prior to becoming sheriff of Clarke County, he held a detective role with Jackson Police Department, and has altogether over 29 years of experience in law enforcement, including working closely with Presidential Service and the FBI National Academy. Sheriff Smith has also been active in educational roles. He has previously taught leadership classes at the United State Marine Corps and various schools across the community. The sheriff believes that influential leadership starts with a foundation based on integrity. Resting upon that foundation is a series of leadership principles, the most important of which is the principle of setting the example. About the County
Clarke County is located in the southwestern part of Alabama and was created on December 10, 1812m by the legislature of Mississippi Territory. It was named for General John Clarke of Georgia. This area was also known for its importance in the Civil War, as the salt that was produced from the county’s natural springs was shipped all over the south, making for gunboats to begin construction. The county was also home to many famous skirmishes before the end of the war in 1814. The county is also home to a jail facility.
