The Choctaw County Jail was previously located in Butler, Alabama. However, the facility was permanently closed in 2019. Specifically, according to the county sheriff, leaks that occurred at the jail over the years caused the building’s foundation to shift. In fact, a fire inspector discovered a door in the facility that was so bowed from water leaks that it wasn’t functional. All inmates are now being housed in neighboring county jails. Sheriff
The sheriff of the county is Scott Lolley. He studied criminal justice at the University of South Alabama. He was elected as Choctaw County Sheriff in 2015 and is registered as part of the Democratic party.

About the County
The county is located in the southwestern part of the state of Alabama, and it was founded on December 29th, 1847. It was named after the Choctaw tribe. Choctaw County’s population reached its all-time peak during the 1920’s. This was in relation to jobs that were created from the sawmill boom with large lumber companies progressing in that area during that time. Currently, Richard Shelby and Tommy Tuberville are Choctaw County’s senators.

The median household income for residents of Choctaw County in 2021 was $38,581, and 17.7% of these families live within the poverty line. The median age of those living in Choctaw County is 46.6.
