Sheriff

The sheriff of Barbour County is Tyrone Smith. He took office on January 14, 2019. Sheriff Tyrone SMith grew up in Eufaula, Alabama. He attended SouthWest Alabama Police Academy (now called The APOSTC Law Enforcement Academy Baldwin County) and then became a patrol officer at the Eufaula Police Department. He later became a field training officer, traffic homicide investigator, and then an investigator in the Criminal Investigation Division. Through that position, he investigated burglaries, robberies, sexual crimes, and other felony-level crimes. Throughout his career he has collaborated with law enforcement officials and other law enforcement agencies. He represented the District Attorney’s office as a member of the Drug Court Board.

Barbour county was established on December 18, 1832. The land was developed mainly as cotton plantations, dependent on slave labor. Barbour County is in the southeast portion of Alabama. The largest city is Eufaula. The population of Barbour County is 24,964 according to the 2021 United States Census. The median household income was $36,422 in the 2021 United States Census.
